The Yakkum Page

YAKKUM is a non-profit organisation that assists young people with disabilities to work, earn a living and become respected members of their communities. It’s been an All Saints outreach project for 21 years. Recently YAKKUM has had difficulty raising enough from sales to cover overheads and salaries, so are under financial pressure.  If you are interested in supporting the project there are a variety of wooden toys and carvings, soft toys, and paper-tole pictures of typical Indonesian scenes that can be purchased – great gifts for friends and family, or for yourself.

YAKKUM Craft:

Established in 1991, YAKKUM Craft is the sister organisation of Pusat Rehabilitasi YAKKUM, a rehabilitation centre which gives assistance to physically disabled children and young adults. Potential producers of YAKKUM Craft are trained for between three and six months by Pusat Rehabilitation YAKKUM. Thos who reach the required standard are asked to become a regular producer. Wooden toys are made in a small workshop in Yogyakarta, and wood turned items are produced at the Centre. These producers are paid monthly wages according to their ability. Most of the wood carving is done in the individuals own homes. The raw materials and tools are provided and the producers are paid per item made.

By these means, many physically disabled young adults previously unemployed, unemployable and a liability to their families, are now becoming contributors to their family income. This product is made from mahogany, sonokeling (rose wood), teak, or coconut wood. Any paint used is specially mixed to meet the non-toxic requirements of the European Union and the U.S.A.
