All Saints Outreach Ministry
an introduction to All Saints Outreach Ministry from the Chair of Outreach |
|
All Saints Anglican Church has an active and wide reaching Outreach program in Indonesia, with projects reaching far flung parts of the archipelago. In total we have 27 active projects, some of which have been associated with All Saints since the early 1970s.
The aim of our Outreach ministry is to share the love of Jesus in Indonesia.
Projects (A description of each of the projects can be read here) Projects are grouped under three main priorities:
1. Strengthening Indonesian Christian leadership The largest part of our funds goes to our Scholarship Program which provides scholarships for tuition fees for undergraduate and graduates pursuing theological degrees in approved theological institutes in Indonesia. At present we are supporting over 100 students in 10 schools. Through this project All Saints has touched many lives in Indonesia, with an average of about 30 -35 graduating students each year. Many church members have met graduates of our program in various ministries all over Indonesia who are very grateful for the opportunity given to them via our scholarships. Books for Ministry is another project, which provides Christian reference books for graduating students of our scholarship programs to equip them with tools for their ministry, but we have also sponsored libraries for theological schools as well as sponsored the publishing of the Indonesian version of specific books. Another project in this category is Masa Meriba, an organization that provides teachers to teach Christian students in neighbourhood schools who have very little other choice but to attend Islamic lessons during their religion period.
2. Directly share the gospel In this category we support a lot of the International agencies, for example, Bible Society, Scripture Union- provision of scripture notes, Overseas Missionary Fellowship(OMF), Church Missionary Society (CMS) in Australia, SIL International , Youth with a Mission (YWAM) which has an orphanage for young people but also runs discipleship programs. These organizations have been working in Indonesia for many years and through their established networks have made a large contribution to Christians in Indonesia. All Saints is proud to be associated with them. Local organizations in this category include Kartidaya, which do language studies with local dialects; YMMP – the New Tribes Mission, which reaches remote tribes in nearly inaccessible areas of Indonesia; Tell-a-village, which produces Christian programs on video to be distributed to villages around Indonesia which have been supplied with TVs and VCRs; YASKI, which runs Christian radio broadcasting and also has programs in local dialects; PERKANTAS, the Inter-varsity Christian fellowship in Indonesia, which also provides training and discipleship programs for graduates in their alumni programs; Gospel recordings (through tapes and a hand wound player); and Bina Kasih, a local Christian publishing house which produces Christian literature and is associated with OMF.
3. Christ-like ministries to the poor and needy All Saints supports projects involved in a wide range of activities to help the poor and needy. Kampus Diakoneia Modern( KDM) ministers to street children, helping them adapt to normal life and provide schooling and vocational training; YAKKUM in Jogjakarta have a rehabilitation centre for the physically handicapped, helping them to become economically viable in their own right; Rawinala is a home for multiple handicapped children; the Madurese Poverty and Health Alleviation project helps a large group of displaced refugees who fled racial clashes in Kalimantan with medical costs and community development programs; Hannah’s House is a home for the elderly in Bogor which provides a loving and peaceful environment for senior citizens whose families are not able to support them; the Urban Poverty Relief project helps some urban poor communities in greater Jakarta with school fees and emergency medical aid; Yayasan Emmanuel has a baby home, an orphanage, a food rescue and clean water program for the slums of Jakarta and is looking to start a learning centre to help school children. We also support 3 orphanages, Panti Asuhan Ebenezer, Panti Asuhan Petrus and Panti Asuhan Mahanaim, in East Java and Bali respectively.
Only one special project, Lake’s Books, is a revenue generating project. This originated with the book Changes and Chances written by our previous Vicar, Andrew Lake on the history of All Saints church, the sale proceeds of which have been generously donated to All Saints’ Outreach ministry.
All Saints helps our projects largely through providing funding but also in non monetary ways through volunteers, networking and introductions, donations in kind and prayers.
Coordinators Our strength lies in the group of dedicated project coordinators who are all members of All Saints and on a volunteer basis serve in our Outreach Committee. Some are long term residents in Indonesia and some are here only for a short period of time. All our coordinators keep in close contact with the projects we support and channel news updates, needs and help between the projects and All Saints. We believe this personal touch is extremely important to maintain good stewardship of the donations entrusted to the Outreach Committee. The committee has evaluation procedures each year to ensure that the projects are still meeting our criteria and are able to respond to any changes in the needs or the situation of the projects. Just being in close contact with the people at our projects who give unselfishly so much of their lives to help others is such an eye opener for us as Coordinators, and we have received a great blessing too as we see God work through these projects.
Funding Funding for Outreach is via direct contributions to the All Saints Outreach Account, from members of the church or friends of All Saints. This can be done via giving envelopes collected during the services or through direct bank transfer into our Outreach Account (please contact us for more information about donating). We do not receive any regular giving from the general church funds, because the Outreach Account has been set up to receive all Outreach donations from All Saints members. Donations in kind or offers of help via volunteers are also gratefully accepted. In recent years there has been a decline in the overall donations to Outreach (due to the reduction in giving by a long-term single donor) which has necessitated a cutback in the funds disbursed to our projects and also a reduction in the number of projects supported. Fortunately the last few years have also seen a significant increase in the amount of funds given by All Saints members. We hope this trend will continue and more people will feel called to contribute their time and money to this worthwhile cause, so that we can increase the funds we distribute.
It is indeed wonderful to see how a reasonably small church like ours can make such an impact on many lives across Indonesia, and we invite you to join in this fulfilling ministry! Pek Swan Chair of Outreach
