A Good Purpose

June 14,  2009  - Sophia Layanto

"God has his purposes for everything. You might not understand it now,
but trust God because he knows the best for you."

I've heard this hundreds of times before, but I never really understood  it until today.

On the way to school, my sister read Matthew 6 aloud, about not worrying about anything, because God takes care of everything, and God loves us and knows what we need. It really struck me.

Last night, I had been talking to mom about complaining. Later on in school, some key elements from our long conversation the night before jumped out to fit with the verses Nana read and my own personal reflection.

I recalled an old sermon by the pastor in my church in Singapore.  It was about the constellation Orion, three bright stars in the dark night sky that form a perfect line. The pastor's sermon was about how the stars in Orion were actually hundreds or thousands of light years apart, and if you were on one of them you wouldn't be able to see anything. Only from this point, Earth, in the whole universe, do the three stars align, in a perfect row. He used this to illustrate that sometimes we don't understand, we can't see the greater meaning in things. But God can see the big picture that we cannot comprehend. We are just one small piece in God's giant picture, and we might not even have a clue. One puzzle piece of his giant, beautiful, perfect jigsaw. And because God loves us so much and he knows everything, we can trust that he is doing it right.

Suddenly, it all clicked together in my head, and I understood.

I expected a lot from the week. I got a lot of disappointments. I was frustrated, I was angry. I had a discussion with my mom. My sister read a Bible verse. I suddenly remembered an old sermon. I was reminded that we were supposed to pray that 'God's will be done', not ours.

"God used me, used your sister, used your bad day, used the verse, to make it all click in your head. That's amazing. That's how you know God is real. He's speaking to you." - Mom, said when I told her about it.

So...
Don't worry about the future.
God loves us.. God knows everything. God will take care of us, and we can trust him. Relax, and let everything play out, knowing that God is in total control.

Whatever happens, God is in control. There is a purpose. And it is good.
