Lamb of God
September 7, 2008 - Ian
Lambs are cute, they are small, fluffy, white, innocent and
leaping about in the open field. So why did John the Baptist describe Jesus as
the Lamb of God? Lambs were used by the people of Jesus’ day as animals to be
sacrificed to bring about forgiveness
from
God. “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” is what John called
Jesus and so is thinking of a sacrifice for sin.
Poor little cute and innocent lamb and it must to die for the
sin of a human!? It seems so harsh when what has the lamb done? But that was the
system that God put in place for the world, before the coming of the Lamb of God
in human flesh, before Jesus arrived. God’s system demanded a life for every
sin; that is the high cost of sin; that is how offensive sin is to God.
That should make us ashamed of our sin, and cause us to work
hard at stopping these offenses. Does it?
It also makes me aware of how powerful Jesus’ death is in
securing forgiveness. For he pays the price not just for me but for you and
others as well, for generations of people before Jesus lived and generations of
people since and generations of people yet to come, one Lamb of God for all
those people and all those sins ....wow.
That should make us grateful for Jesus’ sacrifice and not to
take this gift of grace for granted. Does it?
One innocent person paying for all those guilty sinners – and he
does it willingly...wow. I bet that the lambs are very happy as well...
