God Talk

February  24, 2008  - Ian

“Only one person has ever spoken to me about God at refreshment time after church”. This comment was made to me recently by one of our members at Don Bosco. That is very sad. Has that been your experience? And how often have you mentioned God in your after church conversation?

I want to challenge us all, including myself, to talk about God more, especially in the safe confines of church morning tea/refreshments at All Saints. After church is a safe time when we are with people who have similar thinking to us, after all they attend the same church. We have talked about God for the last hour, sung about him, sung to him and talked with him and even heard from him....So why end there? Surely God is worth talking about more than one hour per week!

Could we not, when talking with people, also involve some talk about God? Like asking, “How has God been good to you this week?” rather than asking “Was it a good week?” If you are following up on an issue that you have talked about last week, why not ask “Has God answered my prayers about...... (the issue)”? This is also an incentive to make sure that we do pray!!!

The more we do it in the comfortable surroundings of church, the more likely we might talk about God in the other life situations, where it might be harder. Jesus talked about not hiding your light under a basket... (read Matthew 5:14-16) If we really are captivated by God then we will want to talk about him and not be ashamed. But maybe we are ashamed?

Indonesia is a very religious nation and yes there is a fanaticism and so I understand some hesitancy in talking about God but Indonesia is a culture where asking about one’s religion is a comfortable, culturally appropriate question. Maybe our real hesitancy comes from something else?

My original after church speaker continued to challenge me... “it is sad that Jesus gets left out”. I agreed with her. For it is easier to talk about “God” because God means different things to different people yet ‘it’ can all be called ‘God’ without too much offense! But Jesus...well yes, here there is less misunderstanding about the ‘term’.

I would rather we talked about Jesus, after all we are Christians, Christ’s people and we of all people should be talking about Christ Jesus. But let’s start with what is easier.

Try talking about God after church this Sunday.

It seems like I'm the one of those who are rare talking about God after church. Sometimes we even talk about negative things about people surround us. It's a bad behavior indeed, but we still enjoy doing that. Thanks Ian, for reminding us to talk more about God. It's much better than gossip.
